Seasons for growth

Space supports you and your baby throughout your first critical year, while you build great relationships with other parents.

Seasons for growth

Seasons for Growth is a loss and grief education programme that uses the idea of seasons to understand the experience of grief and the ups and downs of life. It helps participants explore the impact of change and loss and effective ways to respond and adapt. In the Seasons for Growth programme we look at

•   Seasons and Change (autumn)

•   My story and grief reactions (winter)

•   Feelings and memories (spring)

•   Choices and moving forward (summer)

At Seasons for Growth you learn that you are not alone in your experience of change, loss and grief, and you are able to build your communication, decision making and problem solving skills with a safe and supportive peer group.

Who can join a group?

Anyone who is living with the effects of change and loss can join one of our programmes. Many things can cause change:

  • we can lose people we care about through death, relocation or separation;
  • we can move to a new location;
  • we can lose something we love;
  • we can have changes in work-life within our family;
  • and we can also have to process the impact of illness.

Change affects everyone differently, as does grief. It’s the impact of the change, not the event itself that Seasons for Growth focuses on.

4x 2 hour sessions in a small group of 4-7 adults.

The programme supports participants in learning about the personal impacts of change, loss and grief, whilst developing skills in communication, decision-making and problem-solving.  This helps to restore self confidence and self-esteem.

Our adult groups are run in the community across the North Shore and Hibiscus Coast.

Seasons for Growth Children and Young People’s Programme

8 sessions of approximately 45 minutes

Our programme includes a wide range of activities involving drawing, role-play, stories, discussion, playdough, music and journal activities.

There are four different levels of the programme based on the age of the participants.

Our programmes respect children’s capacity to cope, problem-solve, make good choices, set realistic goals and connect with others. Children’s learning is documented in a personal ‘Seasons for Growth’ journal so that participants can re-visit their insights in the future.

Our Children and young people’s programmes are usually run in a school setting, although we do run some community groups.

Our programmes are facilitated by trained and experienced Companions who accompany the participants on their journey. Companions care deeply about supporting children, young people and adults as they learn about the impact of change and loss in their lives, and how best to cope with this.

Companions are volunteers from all walks of life who believe they are able to offer the support and encouragement needed by our participants. You do not need to be a trained professional therapist or counsellor to facilitate our programmes. To become a Companion, individuals participate in a two-day training programme involving theory and practice and then are mentored by an experienced Companion.
